An apple a day keeps the doctor away. Listening to music has the same effect. It helps in stress management, changes one's mood and brings positive effects physically. People can stay healthy by listening to music and good music helps one to have a better quality of life.

WenWen Zhang, a CMU junior from China, shows off her favorite skinny pant in the photo studio. Skinny pant is very popular among teenagers nowadays. It can make you look very fashionable and make your legs look slimmer than before.

Chinese junior, Yan Chu, wears one of her favorite black sweaters that she bought when she was back at home. Black color can easily work well with bright colors, but it also works well with dark colors if you match it carefully. Chu did a really good job by matching it with a dress inside.

It's Light!
Diet Coke is also known as Coke Light. It is one of the soft drink productions by The Coca-Cola Company and has been launched into the United States in August, 1982. It is made with artificial sweetener, does not contain carbohydrates and thus is suitable for people on diet or diabetics.

For this photos, I put a main light with a big soft box on the right and a fill light on the left. Then, I set the self timer to 10 seconds so that I had enough time to run back to the position from the camera. Instead of manipulating an image, I chose to create my photo. This is because I am not good in photoshop. There is nothing worse than taking risk on creating a photo which doesn't look real to me or any other viewers. I am quite satisfied with the 'floating' effect here, and I think my face expression helps too!

Smoke

Smoke is very mysterious that you can hardly catch it or keep it although you can see it very often. It is concrete yet very abstract and its existence always gets neglected.

For this smoke series, I used a table light on the left and a strobe on the right. I used a table light because it allowed me to see the smoke in a completely dark situation. In my experiment on this shooting, the hardest part for me was to create the shape of the smoke that I wanted. Therefore, all I could do was to burn a paper stick and blew it slowly to make the smoke diffuse into a wider area. I also used a color gel to change the color of the smoke.

Water has its own unique temper. It can be very calm yet gets excited with even a very tiny disturbance. You can’t stop it from waving when you try hard but it stops by itself when you put it aside.

Similar to the smoke series, I put a table light on the left and strobe on the right. I used a reflector clamp to hold a cup right on the top of my bowl. Water should be added little by little so that it did not come out too fast. The strobe did not point directly to the bowl but pointed to a piece of white paper that I used as the background. By using a color gel on the strobe, I made the water in a different color.

Cigarettes and Lighters

Lighters and cigarettes are a perfect match. They complement the existence of each other. Some people get addicted and can’t stop smoking even though they are aware and understand that smoking is harmful.
Other than creating the smoke and the water drops, I tried some photographs of solid subjects. During the period of World Cup 2010 in South Africa, a lighter of the England team was given out for every purchase of a certain amount of Carlsberg beer. I am very proud to own these lighters. So, lighters and cigarettes are really a good match to make a photograph.

Cohen's mom, Angie, will give birth to her third kid on next March. They sit together and talk about those days when Cohen was given treatments in Ann Arbor hospital. Angie says Cohen has a better memory than her because he still can remember the most happy moments of those days. She is also glad that he does not remember the unhappy and painful parts when he was undergoing the chemotherapy.

JRN 420: Painting with light

Heineken Light is a light beer which has been launched to United States in 2006. The calories of this light beer is only 99 calories and it comes with 3.2% alcohol by volume. This product has provided a low calorie alcohol alternative to drinkers.

I clicked on the shutter and then put the LED light into the water and took it out slowly to make the bubbles inside the bottle more obvious. After that, I used a pink glow stick to draw on the background to create a feel of mystery. I came out with this idea as i was trying to be creative to make an advertisement for the Heineken beer

I also tried to use a cigarette to create the smoky effect on some other shots. However, it did not turn out great and the smoke could not be seen on the photos.

CMU senior, Tze Lin Low, feels upset and angry because she has lost her limited edition England national soccer team's bottle which she bought in her mother country, Malaysia.

Yes, I lost my England soccer team's bottle last week in Moore 424, and I have been looking for it everywhere. I used a LED light to draw the bottle shape (believe me, it looks like a bottle!!!) and the "angry effect". I used two pocket wizards (one on the camera and one on the strobe) and set the self-timer to 10 seconds so that the strobe could work together with the camera. I wore the England team jacket because I thought it could help me to tell you all how much I love the England team and in the meanwhile how much I was hurt when I lost my bottle.
p/s Did you see a red bottle with a little England flag in Moore 424? Leave a comment here or tell me after class, Thank you!!!

Marcus Luke, a CMU senior majoring in Business Law and Economics, had experiences modeling for Abercrombie and Fitch before. I am really glad that I had him as my studio subject. I think it is important to work with an experienced model because he gave me some ideas that I had never thought of.

Kendo is a traditional sword-fighting of Japan. According to All Japan Kendo Federation in 1975, the concept of Kendo is to discipline human characters through the application of the principles of the Katana (sword). Learning Kendo can enable people to love their country and society more, and to promote peace and prosperity among them.
The portrait of my shooting is Tyler Dunham, a Kendoka as well as a senior from CMU. He has been doing Kendo since January 2007. He has awarded 2nd place in Michigan Family Taikai. On the shooting day, he brought shinai, bogu and hakama to show me how a Kendoka should wear like.
